The Opportunity:
We are currently supporting a leading public sector organisation in the search for an experienced Lead DevOps Engineer to join their technology function on an initial 6-month contract basis for a major central government project (Government Digital Services / GDS). This is an excellent opportunity to lead the delivery and optimisation of cloud-native DevOps capabilities across AWS and Azure environments within a highly secure, mission-critical organisation supporting nationally important services. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across cloud infrastructure, automation, CI/CD and platform engineering initiatives, helping to drive operational resilience, scalability and modern engineering practices across complex enterprise environments.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, implementation and optimisation of DevOps and cloud engineering practices across AWS and Azure platforms
- Drive Infrastructure as Code (IaC), automation and CI/CD best practices across engineering teams
- Design and maintain scalable, resilient and secure cloud infrastructure environments
- Lead the development and optimisation of CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment processes
- Support containerised and cloud-native application deployments using Kubernetes and related technologies
- Work closely with architecture, security, development and operational teams to support platform reliability and scalability
- Champion DevOps culture, engineering standards and continuous improvement initiatives
- Implement monitoring, observability and alerting solutions across cloud platforms
- Support cloud migration, transformation and platform modernisation programmes
- Troubleshoot complex infrastructure, deployment and operational issues
- Provide mentoring and technical leadership to engineering teams
- Produce and maintain technical documentation, standards and operational procedures
Skills and Experience:
- Strong commercial experience within DevOps, platform engineering or cloud infrastructure environments
- Proven experience working across both AWS and Azure cloud platforms
- Experience implementing monitoring, logging and observability solutions
- Strong understanding of cloud networking, security and resilience best practices
- Experience operating within enterprise-scale or highly regulated environments
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and technical leadership capability
Strong expertise with Infrastructure as Code technologies such as:
- Terraform
- CloudFormation
- ARM Templates
- Bicep
Strong CI/CD pipeline engineering experience using technologies such as:
- Azure DevOps
- GitHub Actions
- Jenkins
- GitLab CI/CD
Hands-on experience with:
- Kubernetes
- Docker
- Container orchestration
Strong scripting and automation capability using:
Desirable Experience:
- Experience within government, healthcare or highly regulated environments
- Exposure to platform engineering and cloud-native operating models
- Experience with security and compliance tooling within cloud environments
- Familiarity with event-driven and microservices architectures
- AWS and/or Microsoft Azure certifications highly advantageous
NB: The successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic level of security clearance before undertaking the assignment (around two weeks’ lead-time).
